Environment
Laurens Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper are working together on the Green Power Program in response to increased customer interest in renewable energy and concern for the environment. One of Laurens Electric's core values is commitment to the community. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve and Green Power will help us do that. By encouraging demand for renewable energy, we can help reduce reliance solely on limited generation resources while improving and preserving the environment for future generations.
With the option of purchasing Green Power, Laurens Electric Cooperative, Inc. customers can now directly reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the atmosphere.
Green Power is electricity generated from a renewable resource, in this case methane gas produced at the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Landfill, Lee County Landfill SC, LLC and the Richland County Landfill. The methane gas from the decomposing garbage that would normally be released into the atmosphere - gases that possibly contribute to global warming - produces 14.2 megawatts of electric power.
