Safety efforts earn co-op a statewide honorr

An outstanding safety record has earned Laurens Electric Cooperative the 2005 ECSC President's Safety Award from the statewide association of electric co-ops.

"Laurens Electric maintained the lowest accident rate among co-ops of its size in 2005"

Terry Williams, vice president of Loss Control and Training with ECSC (The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc.), announced the award in January. ECSC is the trade association for 20 independent, consumer-owned electric cooperatives around the state, providing safety, training, communications and other assistance to member co-ops.

Laurens Electric Cooperative topped Category I, which is for co-ops with 100 or more   employees. Laurens Electric and two other winning cooperatives maintained the lowest accident rates among co-ops of their size for 2005.

“This is a significant accomplishment of which the winning cooperatives should be very proud," Williams said. "It could not have occurred without the full support of each and every employee at each cooperative.”

Williams noted that Laurens Electric has previously received the award, which was established in 1999, in 2003. The co-op's focus on safety not only protects employees but also co-op member-owners and the general public, he said, while helping to hold down the cost of service.

"Electricity is a friend when used safely and wisely," Williams said. "Co-op members should follow the example of Laurens Electric Cooperative employees, who each day heed their motto of 'Safety Begins with Me.'"
