Roebuck Elementary hosts energy efficiency event with help from Laurens Electric

Roebuck Elementary School Principal Annie Means and Laurens Electric Cooperative representative David Hammond (far right) educate students and teachers about energy efficiency during the student-produced morning show aired on closed circuit TV.

On Wednesday, September 9, the students and teachers at Roebuck Elementary School held an energy saving, educational event. Teachers discussed with students the importance of energy efficiency and then switched the light bulbs in their classrooms to compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, donated by Laurens Electric Cooperative.

Principal Annie Means began the transition to CFLs first thing in the morning by addressing her audience via closed circuit TV on the school’s morning show, discussing the importance of energy conservation and explaining the facts about CFLs.

“At Roebuck Elementary School, our theme is Eagles for the Earth: Keeping it Green! Being a Green Steps school is a wonderful opportunity for Roebuck Elementary School and our community,” stated Means.

Teachers at Roebuck Elementary School corroborate the day’s energy conservation lessons by letting students change the incandescent bulbs in classrooms to compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, donated by Laurens Electric Cooperative.

Following the morning show, teachers further explained energy-saving concepts to students and then demonstrated by changing the bulbs in their classroom.

“We are teaching our students that part of being green involves conserving energy,” said Means. “We are actually putting energy conservation techniques into practice at our school by replacing old light bulbs with CFLs.”

At the end of the school day, students took home pledge cards for their parents to sign, promising to change at least one light bulb in their home to a CFL. At PTO Open house on September 17, 2009, Roebuck Parents will also have the opportunity to receive CFLs donated by Laurens Electric Cooperative.

“Our students are very enthusiastic about sharing and implementing green practices not only at school but at home and with others. We are very fortunate to have Laurens Electric Cooperative working with us to help keep it green,” Means said.

Laurens Electric Cooperative serves 51,000 member-owners in Laurens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Newberry, Union, and Abbeville counties. Since 1939, the co-op has been dedicated to being the provider of choice for energy and related services in the Upstate.
