LEC announces second community solar offering

Laurens Electric Cooperative will add 150 kilowatts (kW) of capacity to its community solar program this summer, by adding 60 kW to its Mauldin solar farm and building a 90 kW solar array at its Laurens headquarters.

Jim Donahoo, the co-op’s Vice President of Marketing said, “We’re excited to announce this second phase of our Community Solar program, which gives our members the option to go solar without installing panels on their property.”

The co-op is pre-selling a total of 150 new kilowatt units to members who would like to subscribe to a portion of the community solar farm’s generation capacity on a first-come, first-served basis.

Donahoo said, “With the community solar option there is no liability for the member, no HOA rules to worry about and the subscriptions are transferrable.”

LEC’s residential members can choose the number of kilowatt (kW) units they would like to subscribe to (limit 5) at the community solar site for a 20 year period. For the average LEC member’s home, one kW unit will cover approximately 12.5 percent of the home’s energy use.

Members pay a portion of the cost per kW unit upfront, and the remainder of the cost is paid in a monthly charge. The output of those kW units is credited back to the member at 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). Members pay a one-time $20 administrative fee for participating in the program.

Pricing includes an upfront charge of $50 per kW unit, and a monthly charge of $14 per kW unit. Subscribing members will receive a monthly credit of 10 cents per kWh produced.
